In late November, a hunting buddy and I went out to release his Karelian bear dog in the hopes of finding a large boar that had taken over one of our baits. It was guarding the bait tightly and chasing away any other boar that came there, and we don't want that, we want lots of boar on the bait.
I took a pass and he released the dog who started tracking, but the boar seemed to have gone a long way off so it took a while but soon the direction finder showed that the dog was coming out of the field. We were also unsure if the dog was going after the boar as the track was quite old but when we saw that it was heading into an area where there are often wild boars, we were still hopeful that we would soon catch up.
I switched to by far the best boar pass we have on the whole ground and just as I arrived I heard a couple of sparse shells and a quick glance at the bearing showed that it was going away! So I got ready as this pass is rock solid, the boars go over there every time. And after just a few minutes I hear how the boar comes running through the forest!
It comes shot like a cannon across the road! The distance is about 50-60m, I swing along and when the red point is right, the North Fork SS bullet leaves the barrel. No reaction at all! I send off another shot and another when the boar disappears into the bushes and then it is gone.
The dog comes shortly after and a little way into the woods becomes quiet for a while but soon comes back. So we suspect that the boar is there but we get a little worried because she usually does not leave her prey. But I take her on a leash and track into the forest and indeed the boar is there!
The first shot was perfectly in the back of the shoulders and the bullet was in the skin, unfortunately the second shot took straight in the lower legs! The third was a clean miss. The scale stopped at 120kg and it is the second largest boar I ever shot.
The SS bullet had mushroomed perfectly as usual and only lost 2gr in weight! The caliber is 308w.
